It all starts with VARTA

Over the last century, vehicle technology has evolved enormously, and VARTA has been at the forefront of developing world-leading battery technology. As a result, today, millions of people and businesses around the world rely on VARTA to power their vehicles.

For our trade customers buying VARTA through our distribution partner Manbat, you are probably already aware that the key to VARTA’s success has been the sustained development of strong working relationships with the car makers, to build the best batteries for the best new vehicles. Close collaboration with top names such as Audi, BMW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz has provided VARTA with an OE-heritage unrivalled in the automotive battery business.
What Manbat customers may not be so familiar with is the company behind the brand: VARTA is a brand of Johnson Controls Power Solutions, the global leader in lead acid and advanced batteries for conventional, start-stop, hybrid and electric vehicles. Johnson Controls have been the first company to produce lithium-ion batteries for mass-production hybrid vehicles. As a result of these alliances, Johnson Controls have contracts for the supply of batteries for the major manufacturers’ micro-hybrid variants, such as BMW EfficientDynamics, the Ford ECOnetic, Mercedes-Benz BlueEFFICIENCY and Volvo DRIVe to name but a few.

VARTA Start-Stop Plus batteries were recently awarded top marks in a survey by the ADAC (the Germany Automobile Club), and the Stiftung Warentest (the consumer organization which carries out impartial comparative product tests).

Scrap batteries, and closed loop recycling

Written on July 4, 2013 at 9:52 am

When it comes to responsible disposal, businesses have to understand their environmental responsibilities and ensure batteries are disposed of legally, but they should also be aware that they could benefit financially from responsible battery disposal as lead acid batteries have a ‘scrap’ value.

Manbat is a member of the ECOBAT group, which includes specialist waste battery businesses and lead smelter ECOBAT Technologies, one of the world’s leading suppliers of lead. Annually ECOBAT converts millions of tons of lead waste into high quality lead ingots, strip, wire and shot through its efficient smelters across the globe. Among its many customers are a number of major battery manufacturers and some of these brands are subsequently distributed nationally through Manbat’s comprehensive branch network.

The combination of new battery sales and distribution, together with waste battery collection, recycling and the reintroduction of lead into the manufacturing process, means that the ECOBAT group, and therefore Manbat, is able to be exceptionally environmentally aware and is currently the only global company offering a closed recycling loop for lead-acid batteries.

Manbat, the UK’s largest automotive battery distributor has recruited respected aftermarket professional Paul Payne as its new sales director.

Paul has come from DENSO International Europe, where he spent five successful years as the company’s regional manager for UK and Ireland.

Commenting on his appointment, Paul said: “I know it sounds like a cliché, but I’m really excited to join such a well known and respected aftermarket business. Manbat has a reputation for doing things right and following ethical policies, which adds great value to the business.

“In every role in which I have had responsibility I have overseen an increase in the sales and turnover of the business. I therefore believe that with the skills I have gained in the aftermarket over the last 20 years and the tremendous experience of the existing team, I can help continue the company’s expansion.

For Manbat, managing director, Steve Sheppard said: “In the current tough trading conditions it is important that we have a strong and experienced leader who can help to motivate and direct our team of knowledgeable sales managers and continue the growth of the business.

“Paul brings with him these attributes and an appreciation that our business is built on the twin pillars of providing our customers with exceptional service and high quality products. Over the last 60 years, this philosophy has allowed Manbat to grow from a local battery specialist to a major distributor within a global organisation.

“Paul’s previous experience with a number of aftermarket businesses, including large multinational companies like Unipart and DENSO will benefit Manbat by bringing a fresh approach, while maintaining those traditional core values. We are delighted therefore to welcome him aboard.”
