Scrap Theft – a Major Issue

Written on August 14, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Scrap theft is a major issue in the battery industry today. People will go to any lengths it seems to illegally collect spent batteries. When it comes to responsible disposal, businesses have to understand their environmental responsibilities and ensure batteries are disposed of legally, but they should also be aware that they could benefit financially from responsible battery disposal as batteries have a ‘scrap’ value.

Manbat is a member of the EcoBat group, which includes specialist waste battery businesses and lead smelters. EcoBat is one of the world’s leading suppliers of lead. You can be sure batteries collected by us are disposed of / recycled in such a way that negative environmental impact is kept to an absolute minimum. Over 99% of the battery is recycled by Ecobat and our closed loop cycle is unique.

Thankfully perpetrators are now being held to account for scrap theft, below is a statement issued recently by the British Transport Police regarding some arrests.

A British Transport Police spokesman said:

“Martin Goodwin (27), Carl Brazil (18), Ryan Brazil (24), and Ronnie Smith (25), all of Hygrove Lane, Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, have all been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.”
“This follows a joint operation on Wednesday, 17 July at a site in Gloucestershire as part of an on-going investigation into suspected offences of industrial battery theft.”
“The operation saw more than 100 BTP and Gloucestershire Constabulary officers execute warrants following months of intelligence gathering by the National Metal Fusion Intelligence Unit and partners.”
“All four appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 18 July and were remanded in custody. They will next appear on Thursday, 8 August.”
“A fifth man, aged 53 and from Gloucestershire, was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and has been released on police bail until Wednesday, 18 September.”

Manbat Introduces the DCXV Battery

Written on August 14, 2013 at 11:51 am

The market leading NUMAX XV range has been further strengthened by the introduction of the new DC27MF battery.

With five existing options to choose from in the superior NUMAX XV leisure range, consumers will now have another option to consider when purchasing a leisure battery.

The DC27MF comes with extra cyclic capability compared with the XV27MF, making it ideal for applications that need that extra power. Although the Ampere hour capacity and battery dimensions are identical to the XV27MF, its thicker plates and therefore higher reserve capacity enable it to run for even longer, powering more heavy duty applications. This battery is ideal for caravans with motor-movers installed or leisure and marine applications where extra capacity is required.

This battery also benefits from the three year warranty afforded to the whole XV family.

Top Marks for VARTA® Start-Stop Plus

Written on August 14, 2013 at 11:50 am

The best battery for vehicles with advanced Start-Stop technology and regenerative braking is the VARTA Start-Stop Plus, according to the latest survey by ADAC (German Automobile Club) and the Stiftung Warentest, the German consumer organisation which carries out impartial comparative product tests.

Not only did the VARTA Start-Stop Plus with AGM technology take top spot in a cross-market survey, the judges also rated the VARTA Start-Stop with EFB technology – designed for vehicles with standard Start-Stop functions – as “good”.

The ADAC and Stiftung Warentest joined forces to put the two VARTA batteries through their paces against five other Start-Stop batteries from well known manufacturers. Both excelled, with the VARTA Start-Stop Plus achieving the top score against two other AGM batteries.

The judges’ verdict is that conventional batteries are not suitable for modern vehicles with Start-Stop technology. According to the ADAC, normal wet-cell batteries are not able to cope with being left running for such long periods, leading to failure.

Johnson Controls, the manufacturer of VARTA batteries, advises motorists to always use batteries specifically designed for vehicles with Start-Stop technology to prevent premature battery failure.

VARTA scores highly in key categories
Both VARTA batteries boast impressively high reserve capacity and low water consumption. The judges rated the partial discharge cycles and charge acceptance “very good”.

With AGM technology, almost all the battery acid is held within a glass-fibre mat. This means that AGM batteries boast a considerably longer service life and are known for their outstanding performance. The VARTA Start-Stop Plus battery is completely leak-proof, 100% maintenance-free and has three times as much cyclic stability as conventional batteries. These properties are of particular importance when fuel-saving and regenerative braking technologies are involved.

The VARTA Start-Stop battery with EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) technology was specially developed for basic Start-Stop functions found in such popular small cars as the Fiat 500 and Toyota Yaris. This technology restarts the engine in a fraction of a second and ensures a reliable power supply even when the engine is switched off. It also boasts twice the cyclic stability of conventional batteries, meaning it can be discharged more deeply without suffering any loss in functionality.
