Scrap Theft – a Major Issue

Written on August 14, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Scrap theft is a major issue in the battery industry today. People will go to any lengths it seems to illegally collect spent batteries. When it comes to responsible disposal, businesses have to understand their environmental responsibilities and ensure batteries are disposed of legally, but they should also be aware that they could benefit financially from responsible battery disposal as batteries have a ‘scrap’ value.

Manbat is a member of the EcoBat group, which includes specialist waste battery businesses and lead smelters. EcoBat is one of the world’s leading suppliers of lead. You can be sure batteries collected by us are disposed of / recycled in such a way that negative environmental impact is kept to an absolute minimum. Over 99% of the battery is recycled by Ecobat and our closed loop cycle is unique.

Thankfully perpetrators are now being held to account for scrap theft, below is a statement issued recently by the British Transport Police regarding some arrests.

A British Transport Police spokesman said:

“Martin Goodwin (27), Carl Brazil (18), Ryan Brazil (24), and Ronnie Smith (25), all of Hygrove Lane, Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, have all been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.”
“This follows a joint operation on Wednesday, 17 July at a site in Gloucestershire as part of an on-going investigation into suspected offences of industrial battery theft.”
“The operation saw more than 100 BTP and Gloucestershire Constabulary officers execute warrants following months of intelligence gathering by the National Metal Fusion Intelligence Unit and partners.”
“All four appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 18 July and were remanded in custody. They will next appear on Thursday, 8 August.”
“A fifth man, aged 53 and from Gloucestershire, was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and has been released on police bail until Wednesday, 18 September.”
